A Cambridge University study about why the public supports or opposes a democratic system concluded that increases in democracy depress democratic mood, while decreases in democracy, cheer the mood for democracy.

=> the more democracy there is, the more people are no longer as enthusiastic and keen on democracy!

=> the less democracy there is, the more people want more democracy!

This makes sense!
